ABOUT ME

Michelle

Literacy Specialist

I have just over 20 years of experience as a classroom teacher and I have been a literacy tutor for the last three years. I am trained in Sounds-Write, which is a structured synthetic phonics program and have done multiple courses in morphology and etymology, which are super important in understanding why words are spelled the way they are. I have recently completed training in reading, spelling and tutoring for life with Lyn Stone via Lifelong Literacy.

I am committed to continuous improvement as there is just so much to know and understand about how the English language works, and how to teach it. Successful reading, spelling and writing is the key to self-empowerment and future opportunities for our children.

MY APPROACH

Sounds-Write

I use a range of evidence based approaches to increase your child's ability to blend, segment and manipulate sounds, the very skills that underpin fluent reading and writing. As we gain fluency, reading for information becomes important for building knowledge, and also helps students access and comprehend a broad range of fiction and non-fiction texts.

I can also help your child break words down through syllables (spelling) and morphemes (meaning; base words, affixes). This work is based on Lyn Stone's Lifelong Literacy strategies.

Writing starts with words, then phrases, sentences and paragraphs. We will respond to a range of texts with supported sentence writing and dictation, building the skills that underpin independent writing.

Student Intake

I work with students who have a diagnosis in a specific learning disability - in reading (dyslexia) or in writing (dysgraphia) OR who are significantly behind their peers and are waiting for an assessment through an Educational Psychologist. Is your child ready and motivated to learn? Get in touch to make a time to discuss how we can work together.

LETS WORK TOGETHER

60 minute sessions are available from 3.30 - 4.30pm and 4.30-5.30pm Monday - Thursday in Weetangera.

I recommend that your child have at least two terms of weekly support to see real gains. Completing homework tasks will also aid progress.

Due to limited time slots available for students, I require a term by term commitment. I know that life gets busy and things change, so I offer one make-up session per term.
